Twenty

I jerked awake, my neck stiff and my back aching from the hard tile floor. It took me several seconds to remember where I was, but the sterile smell of the doctor’s office filled my nostrils.

My eyes darted to Jessie’s still body on the bed. It appeared as though she hadn’t moved at all.

Footsteps approached the door, and I scrambled to sit up, wincing as my muscles protested. The doctor entered, his eyebrows rising slightly at the sight of me on the floor.

“What time is it?” I croaked, my voice rough from sleep and worry.

“Early morning,” he said, taking the thermometer out of the drawer.

I groaned as I got to my feet. At some point in the night, I’d found a pillow in the cabinet so I could stretch out on the floor. It was mildly shocking that I’d actually fallen asleep, but I’d been so exhausted, both mentally and physically.

A woman dressed in nursing clothes hurried into the room as the doctor pulled the thermometer out of Jessie’s mouth. I watched anxiously as she efficiently replaced the empty IV bag with a fresh one, the clear liquid beginning its steady drip into Jessie’s arm.

“How’s she doing?” I asked, my voice soft.

I lowered myself onto the chair, digging my fingers into the back of my neck. The doctor removed the cloth and set it next to the sink.

“Replace that IV,” he said to the nurse.

“Of course, Doctor Styles,” she said, giving him a quick nod before taking the cloth out of the room.

“Jessie,” the doctor said, his voice firm. He ignored my question as he placed a hand on her shoulder, giving it a gentle shake. “Can you hear me? I need you to open your eyes now so we can get you some medicine, okay?”

My heart raised into my throat as I watched for any signs of a response. The seconds stretched, and worry quickly sank into my stomach. But then, miraculously, her eyelids fluttered, and she groaned.

“Oh, my God, Jessie!” I said, getting to the other side of the bed.

Her eyes opened only halfway, and it seemed as though she couldn’t focus. She blinked a few times before turning to me.

“Alice?” she mumbled, her voice raspy. “Where… where am I?”

Relief flooded through me so intensely that, for a moment, I thought I might pass out. My vision swam, and I took her hand. She was awake. She was talking.

“You’re at the doctor’s office,” I managed to say through the thick lump in my throat. “You weren’t getting better, but now the doctor is going to help. You’re going to be okay now.”

“Her temperature is still quite high,” Doctor Styles said as the nurse returned to the room and placed the cloth on Jessie’s head.

“She’s awake!” the nurse said, smiling as she patted Jessie’s leg.

Doctor Styles turned to the nurse and whispered something about medicine. The woman smiled at Jessie before leaving the room again.

“You had us pretty worried,” Doctor Styles said, leaning closer to listen to her heart through his stethoscope.
